Posted - 19 Sep 2023 : 18:41:44 Gameplan: Strike ground units between stp5 and 6, turning cold before stp6 to not conflict with Mako6. Have one flight A-A while the other one is A-G. Minimal air threat expected due to location, and presence of friendly flights around.
Execution: Cajun1 ended up taking off 7mins after Mako6 due to issues with #3 getting a good jet. Mako6 was on target as we ingressed 50NM behind, picture was clear.
Around 30NM from target, Mako6 informed of close pair of Mig-23s, and had to engage. Already heads down due to picture clear, Cajun1 switched back A-A but threat was dealt with before we could support. Both flight switched back to A-G due to picture clear.
Cajun1 sorted ground targets. Mako6 called dakota and took role of A-A, Cajun13 was also dakota and ready to support A-A. Both Cajun13 and Mako6 picked up several threats ~50NM north of our area (2x 2ship Mig-23). While Mako6 engaged the closest, Cajun13 got target fixated on the 2ship further away. The closest 2ship of Mig-23s ended up blowing through Mako62 and ended up 10NM from Cajun13 while he was engaging the other 2ship. Cajun13 merged but was shot down. Both Cajun11 and 12 called for spike 23 close, and retrograded south. Cajun11 jettisoned bombs. Coming back, we spotted 2ship Su-25s and our 2ship Mig-23s in a furball, with Mako6. A DPRK Su-25 was shot down by Cajun11, with a Mig-23. The other Mig-23 was splashed by the remaining Su-25. Picture clear. Cajun12 dropped his bombs
Uneventful egress and RTB.
Lessons learnt: Even if minimal air threat was expected, a dedicated escort should have sanitized the area and provide CAP.
