Our last attack on Mecheria AB was a disaster with the loss of eleven air frames from multiple scrambling aircraft and SA-17 launchers. We did not come close to an attack run on the airfield.

Command have tasked us with neutralising this airbase, but this time in two phases, the first being a dedicated DEAD mission with heavy air support.

The SA-17 battalion is known to be relatively static and lying on the NE corner of the city protecting the factory. A large group of ground units exists in the city that also has SA-9 and AAA defence.

A further SA-17 battalion has been spotted well south of the target area but should be noted.

Your package consists of two flights of F-16s and a DCA of four F-15Cs.

Mako 5 (F-16C-52+CFT) - AI (DEAD)

Viper 5 (F-16C-52+CFT) - DCA

Hog 2 (F-15C) - DCA

The above plan shows an attack option from the NNE, which is deemed the safest due to the enemy ground units to the south.

The DCA flights should note that their presence too close to Mecheria will trigger a large scrambled force of MiG-29S.

Your Primary task is to attack and destroy the SA-17 battalion.

The weather is clear at the target.

Mission Success Criteria

AI Flight
Mission Success shall be awarded for the total destruction of the defending SA-17 battalion

Partial Success shall be awarded for the destruction of the Snowdrift, Chairback and SA-17 launchers.

Escort Flights
Mission Success - No losses to the AI flight from enemy air attack.

Partial Success - Max of one loss to the AI flight from enemy air attack.

Good hunting.

Loaded with SDBs we climbed to FL250 (initially) to set for our attack. Fisty had to drop out as his trim controls would not reset and the aircraft was unflyable. We were now a two-ship.

The original plan was to use our height to spot the SA-17 battalion from distance, but as I suspected, this was not possible and we had to divert to a northerly attack (after a short hold while Hog and Viper took care of some enemy aircraft).

We spotted the contacts and let loose with some SDBs. Sorting was not possible as they were clumped together. The end result was a success and the battalion was completely destroyed.

We ran in again with the rest of our SDB's at other units, which turned out to be the engineer battalion that was fixing the airbase (it still has one runway down). At this point I admit to getting target fixated and had to turn and evade an R-77 from one of the many MiG-29S's that scrambled from the nearby airbase.

Pegasus took out one of them while the other escort aircraft dispatched anything that showed it's head, leaving us to leave the area safely.

On return I discovered that I had hit civilians who were around the secondary targets.

On to the runway next time out.
