I relaxed a little and moved into a comfortable position for the long flight to the target. This part of a mission is always the most boring, flying a F-16 in loose formation is lots easier than driving a bus… but still I couldn't relax fully as we might get jumped by enemy fighters even on our side of the FLOT.

Time passed slowly as we cruised at 250kts towards the FLOT, we were at 23000 ft so we had a nice panoramic view of North Korea even though the haze clouded visibility at a distance.

One of my flight instructors back at the OCU, Boomer, once said "flying combat missions are 95% boredom and 5% sheer adrenaline". Well I guess he knew what he was talking about!

It was amazing that the Slammer didn't explode in the vicinity of the bandit. Nevertheless, I switched to the heat and got a solid lock. "Fox two". I saw the missile leave the rail and got blinded for a second. But this missile missed the bastard too. With a hard right hand turn, I got behind this bandit and locked him with an AMRAAM. "Fox three". This time, I saw the AMRAAM hitting the bandit in the tail. I called "Splash bandit" and felt excited although I just killed a human being.
